Poaching Wars with Tom Hardy    2 × 60"
tx    9pm    Thursday 22 August 2013    ITV1

The every day effect of the poaching business on African wildlife is one of horror and cruelty that brutalises both the animals and the humans involved.

Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) has heard some appalling stories about the poaching industry and now, motivated by his love of animals, he sees first hand the crisis level poaching has reached and what can be done to stop the killing.

All over Sub-Saharan Africa, the poaching crisis is spreading like a plague. Cameroon, Chad, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have all seen large-scale elephant slaughter and throughout the rest of Africa, both rhino and elephant are being killed in alarming numbers.

On his trek across the continent, Tom meets the farmers who have lost livestock to poachers and some of the people fighting back against the poaching industry, including Vincent Barkas from the Pro-Track anti-poaching unit in South Africa, Sean Hensman who is training elephants to track poachers and Tshekedi Khama, the Minister of The Environment, Wildlife and Tourism for Botswana.

Tom also learns about the dangerous people involved in poaching and why they are prepared to kill and die for the prize they are after.
